IS  DAILY ASPIRIN   HARMFUL OR  HELPFUL

Does an aspirin a day, keep the doctor away?  Millions of people today are taking aspirin for primary prevention of heart disease. Half of men over 50, take daily low-dose aspirin.  Can  doctors tell those who are healthy, to stop?

REASONS YOU SHOULD TAKE DAILY ASPIRIN

Everyone agrees that aspirin reduces the risk of heart attacks in people who have severe chest pain, previous heart attacks, or heart abnormal rhythms.   If you have  peripheral vascular disease, or heart disease, or history of stroke, aspirin certainly is beneficial and can reduce your risk of further cardiovascular events.

THE QUESTION IS,  SHOULD EVERYONE OVER 50 BE PUT ON ASPIRIN?

If you are healthy, is aspirin helpful?  A recent  clinical trial show that daily aspirin in asymptomatic people who do not have cardiovascular disease,  creates risks and side effects that outweigh the benefits of taking aspirin.  There were no cardiovascular reductions in rates yet serious side effects as bleeding.

If you believe you are totally healthy, with no history of CVD, aspirin is of  no benefit,  and the risks of bleeding are substantial.   There are now seven randomized controlled trials showing aspirin and doses of 100  milligrams or less is ineffective in cardiac prevention.   If you decrease the dose, it might be even less effective.

Studies also show there is also no benefit in taking aspirin if you have high blood pressure. If you are over 65, there are great risks of serious and even fatal hemorrhage.

WHY HEART ATTACKS OCCUR

You don’t get a heart attack because you don’t have aspirin in our blood.   Heart attacks occur because you lack proper nutrition and your lifestyle caused your blood to clot and inflame your bloodstream.   Over-the-counter painkillers such as aspirin and NSAID are the 15th most common cause of death in the United States.

Taking aspirin every day can be dangerous.  It  doubles your risk of ischemic strokes  and increases the chance of hemorrhagic strokes by 84 times.

EICOSANOIDS

A group of 100 powerful hormones like substances control virtually all your physiological actions. These are called eicosnaoids.   Aspirin lowers both our good and bad eicosanoids

The good eicosnaoids  widen your narrow blood vessels, lower your blood pressure, and lower your risk of heart disease.

The bad eicosanoids, are increased with a  high carbohydrate diet.   This results in insulin resistance, diabetes, high blood pressure, and heart disease.   Any food or drug that increases your insulin levels will increases your bad eicosnaoid  levels.  To reduce the risks of heart disease, a low carbohydrate diet is essential.

DANGERS OF ASPIRIN

Taking aspirin can be dangerous. People develop rashes and collapse into shock from taking aspirin. It causes bleeding during surgery, stomach ulcers, and increases the sensitivity of the blood thinner Coumadin.   It also increases the risk of major hemorrhagic strokes, but decreases the risk other types of strokes.

As you get older, you need as much oxygen as you can get. Cells depend on glycolysis for their energy.  Aspirin activates glycolysis and the respiration of mitochondria.  Aspirin shifts the mitochondrial action away from oxidation of fats to oxidation of glucose. This causes more carbon dioxide production.

Since aspirin blocks new vessel formation, it protects against cancer.  Most people with cancer however, are given opiates instead of aspirin     Opiates increase the release of histamine, which suppresses immunity and stimulates cancers to grow. Hence, opiates actually  hasten  the death of the cancer patient.

Aspirin has the same fact on mitochondria as thyroid, increasing energy production.   Aspirin also improves fertility,  since it suppresses prostaglandins and also improving the circulation of the uterus.   Even adding aspirin to bath water, may improve romantic feelings, since aspirin is also absorbed through the skin.

TAKING ASPIRIN WHEN IN HEART FAILURE QUESTIONED

We know aspirin works when you are having a heart attack, but if you are in heart failure, it is another story.   One third of patients taking aspirin died, suffered a heart attack or had a stroke. Those who did not take aspirin or warfarin only had  a 27% death rate.    Those who took both warfarin and aspirin, spent 200 more days in the hospital for treatment, than those who just took warfarin.

Warfarin is better than no treatment and certainly better than aspirin in heart failure.  If your heart failure is due to lack of blood flow, as it is in two thirds of heart failures, most doctors will place you on aspirin.   Since warfarin is hard to monitor, doctors  rarely use it in heart failure.

Aspirin does not prevent clot formation if you have high blood cholesterol.   If your cholesterol is high, you are more likely to have clotting, and aspirin is also less likely to work. With high cholesterol, there are more leukocytes, macrophages, and platelets.   Your LDL becomes oxidized, and  the lining of your blood vessels is more likely to become injured..

Strokes occur when there is a lack of oxygen to the brain; 80% of the time it is because an artery is blocked.  The remaining 20% are due to  ruptures  of  brain blood vessels. Aspirin interferes with the production of prothrombin, which is vital for blood clotting.

Some people have many little ischemic strokes, and aspirin can lower that rate, but not if it is a hemorrhagic stroke. Aspirin permanently destroys the enzyme cyclo-oxygenase  that  is needed for your body to produce the chemical that signals and triggers pain ( Prostaglandins).  Hence, you will not get a warning  pain signal that your heart is being compromised.

USES OF ASPIRIN

Aspirin is truly a wonder drug of the 20th century. The bark of a willow tree, that contained salicylates, was used during the time of Hippocrates.

A German chemist, Heinrich Dresser, in 1899, found that a shrub of the rose family, Spirea, contained the chemicals that today make up aspirin.  An acetyl group was added to the irritating salicyates, and aspirin was born.

Today aspirin is made synthetically and can be very protective.  For 100 years, we were told that aspirin should be used when there is a fever, since a fever is dangerous. You must, however,  understand what aspirin is doing to your body.

Aspirin is an antioxidant that protects against lipid peroxidation.  It has great anti-inflammatory effects by blocking the release of fatty acids from phospholipids  and triglycerides.   This is why aspirin works in heart attacks, but not in heart failure.   A third of patients who take aspirin die or suffer a heart attack or stroke.

Aspirin blocks abnormal cell division and also reduces clotting.  It blocks the development of new blood vessels that help cancer grow.

We use aspirin to relieve fever, headaches, and inflammation. It  also helps to reduce the pain from rheumatic fever, rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, and other muscular skeletal conditions.

Aspirin also reduces the risk of polyps in the colon. It opens blood vessels making them less prone to be blocked by any clot that may form. If you are high risk for stroke or heart attack, often a low dose aspirin may prevent this if you are a man, but for some unknown reason, not in women.

 SIDE EFFECTS OF ASPIRIN

Aspirin causes  irritation of the stomach. In children who have chickenpox or flu, aspirin may develop an often-fatal disease called  Reye’s  syndrome.  Taking aspirin’s for a long time can also damage your liver and kidney.

Many of us take aspirin hoping it will lower our risk of a heart attack, but new studies show if you are healthy, you should not take aspirin because the risks of bleeding outweigh the benefits.

People with uncontrolled high blood pressure, liver disease, his kidney disease, alters, or are pregnant, should not take aspirin.

ASPIRIN ALTERNATIVES

Many people take various forms of aspirin such as Bayer, Excedrin, Advil, and BC powder  for short-term pain relief. Yet this aspirin deadens your nerves, leading to central nervous system diseases as Alzheimer’s, and stroke.

Aspirin breaks down into a static acid, which destroys red blood cells, and  greatly thins the blood.   When your arteries are clogged, they should be cleansed to improve or enhance the blood flow.  Since aspirin thins the blood, there is even less blood flow and lack of oxygen flow to your  brain.

If you have developed a stomach ulcer, because of aspirin ingestion, try drinking cabbage juice or aloe vera juice.   If you suffer from headaches, you might want to take the herbs that aspirin originally came from, such as: Meadow Sweet, red or white willow bark, or wintergreen.

Remember that a headache occurs because of an acid condition. Alkaline substances can reverse, heal, and cure these problems. Herbs are alkaline substances.

If you have red eyes, you may be developing liver toxicity, which shows in the white of your  eyes. Artichoke, gentian roots, and Barberry  can help cleanse your liver.    Activated charcoal also works.

ASPIRIN FOR PAIN RELIEF

Pain is a question that seeks an answer!   When you have pain, find out the cause of your pain, rather than just  trying to relieve the pain. Prevention is better than the remedy.  Pain has a purpose, since it lets you know something is wrong in your body.   Painkillers, as Celebrex,  nullify the anti-clotting action of aspirin.

COMMENTARY

Rather than taking aspirin, consider controlling your risk factors .   Lower your blood pressure,  lose weight,  quit smoking, and get your cholesterol levels down to normal range.

BRIBE  BULLY AND BUY HOUSE VOTES TO WIN

To get the 216 votes necessary congressmen had to be bought, bribed, bullied, and pressured to get the win.  Lets look how it happened.

We elected a president with his promise to change Washington politics.    He indeed did.  Now voters are furious with the earmarks, insider deals, and lack of transparency.

One week ago, New York Rep Louise Slaughter suggested adding a reconsolidation fix to the bill and “deem” the legislation with all its kicks backs and purchases as having passed.

Rallies were held with supportive small groups. 64 meetings were held with Congressman in four days.   The president flew to Pennsylvania to entice five wavering House Democrats.  He flew to Missouri for three wavering Democrats, to Ohio for eight, to Virginia for four more undecided congressional votes.

The president reminded everyone he still has clout with the Democratic base and would use it against them. Half of the previously undecided members caved in and promised yes votes.

Some needed more pressure.   California Rep Jim Costa demanded an increase in water to his Central Valley district. The following day, the Interior department gave the Valley farmers 25% of water supplies rather than the 5% previously allocated. He too said he clipped to a yes vote.

In Florida Rep Suzanne Kosmos, home to Kennedy Space Center, said she needed more NASA funding.  With a promise, she too flipped to a yes vote.

Tennessee Rep Bart Gordon flipped as he was guaranteed $100 million in extra Medicaid money for his state.

The union heavies went into action and threatened to stop financial support for New York’s Michael McMahon. He switched.

South Dakota Rep Stephanie Sandlin was threatened opposition if she voted no.   She caved in.

Scott Murphy of New York was targeted by a 1.3 million union finance ad campaign to get him to flip.

Florida Rep. Allen Boyd, was promised a challenger if he did not flip. This changed his vote.

Work on the congressional budget office was required to show the bill saved money. Pelosi threw in an added  $66 billion in Medicare cuts and another $50 billion dollars in taxes. A half a dozen Democrats who complained the bill had too many taxes and cuts , now said they were voting to reduce the deficit by voting yes to the bill.

Massachusetts Stephen Lynch, and  California Dennis Cardoza were upset with the "deem and pass" public backlash. Pelosi  backed off the "deem and pass" rule and got their votes.

Some Democrats who voted yes now wanted their own concessions.  Oregon’s Pete DeFazio wanted more  Medicare payments to benefit his state. Pelosi cut a deal to give 17 states additional Medicare money.

Still, the speaker was 3 to 5 votes short.  Stupak and a speaker wrangled over options. The solution was to remove it from Congress altogether, letting the president sign a meaningless executive order affirming no public money would go to pay for abortions.  Stupak caved in and released his members for yes votes. The speaker now had her 216 votes, and three to spare.

Some of the Democrats in the House only agreed to vote for the Senate bill on promises that the sidecar reconciliation would pass. Senate Democrats deliberately refuse to meet with Republican  Senate parliamentarian to get a ruling, since it might be unfavorable and votes would be lost.

Congress was held in historic low  esteem before this vote. Will we remember this spectacle when November elections roll around?

WELCOME TO THE WORLD OF NATIONAL HEALTHCARE

Let’s think about how your doctor’s practice will be affected with the new health reform bill now a reality.  Since most doctors will not be allowed to order as many tests to make diagnoses, the physical examination will be more important.

WELCOME TO  THE  WORLD  OF NATIONAL HEALTHCARE

Dear readers, welcome to the world of national healthcare.

Most lawmakers have no idea of the dynamics of medical care.  Physician input on this reform did not exist.  Let’s think about how your doctor’s practice will be affected.

Since most doctors will not be allowed to order as many tests to make diagnoses, the physical examination will be more important.   Most doctors today are rusty and hasty in their examinations.   They will need to now listen to you the patient more closely, finally look at you and make a hasty judgmental diagnosis.

Since many tests will not be ordered, your doctor will not always be right.   You the patient will encounter more pain and suffering, and your options will include seeking a lawyer for compensation. This will result in doctors choosing which patients are likely to sue, and send them elsewhere.   Medicaid patients, with a low income, will not be welcome and will be shunted to physician assistants who will play doctor in your medical care.

Since the waiting rooms will be full, your doctor will be required to work fast.  Working fast results in errors. He will hire nurses, or better yet practical nurses to screen your symptoms.

Group practices of doctors will be streamlined. The young doctor, with all the latest knowledge, will be eliminated from the practice for financial reasons.   Older physicians, on the cusp of retiring, will hasten their decision to retire. This will result in increasing shortage of doctors.

The successful busy doctors now, will eliminate you the Medicare patient from their practices, and seek patients under the age of 65.   At least, they will be allowed to do more testing, and have less legal liabilities.

Office testing will be nonexistent.   Doctors, who will work under the shield of hospitals, will be the only ones able to order non-routine testing.   Hospitals in the name of   financial savings, will limit the number of physician employees they have.  You the general public will be asked to volunteer your services to the hospital.   Employees who remain will become servants of the government and the hospital. There will be no innovative surgery, and all medical treatment will come from the guideline cookbook of Harvard University, and thus eliminating wasteful spending.

Quality position papers are now being prepared to show the latest drugs are useless, and the drugs were used in 1980 are superb.    It will be shown that new surgical techniques cannot extend your life, and hence should not be used.

Intensive care units will be limited to patients who have a quality life score of at least 10 years.   If you are projected to die within the next 10 years, that is you are 75 or older, your care and hospital stay will be very limited.  You will, however, obtain access to free consultation on how the end of your life can be shortened and made more pleasant.

You, the patient, will be shuffled from clinic to clinic, and your medical care will be delayed.    Every doctor, will tell you your case is unusual, and requires more delicate investigation. Meanwhile your disease, will progress.   If your illness requires surgery, to again delay treatment, medical treatment and pills will be required for several months before surgery   is approved

If you live in the country, expect to travel to a large medical center to receive your treatment. Several appointments will be required, since it will take three weeks for every procedure to be approved, or more likely denied, by a Medicare secretary.

Since 15% of our economy revolves around medical care, it is a great source of revenue saving.   Hospital staffs will be trimmed, treatment centers will be localized, and your medical care will be limited.

You will however, have great access to legal services, where you will be defended, your case will be embellished, and your offsprings will be compensated for your demise.

If you have been contemplating a medical procedure, as a knee replacement, get your surgery done as soon as possible.  Don’t wait until you are 65, and a Medicare recipient.

Stay healthy, eat your seaweed, and fill up your gas tank for your numerous medical visits.   Protect your estate by making a will, because your life expectancy has suddenly decreased.

Let us remember the first day of spring 2010, when national health care became a reality.    Folks, “you ain’t seen anything yet!”

HANDLING PAIN

Despite the discovery of the gene for pain, doctors fail to follow established guidelines in pain treatment.  We often overcomplicate our medical care. It’s best to start with simple treatments that are delivered well.  Adding more treatments and tests will not speed your recovery. This only increase your costs and the risk of side effects.

As a medical physician for over 51 years, I strive to give you the best medical information on controversial medical subjects, and help your read betwwen the lines. HANDLING PAIN

Pain can make your life unbearable. It’s hard to accept pain when it prevents you from playing the piano or playing tennis.  Pain however is essential, and it is a signal that should not be ignored.     Pain tells you something is going wrong in your body or your mind.

Many people today depend on over-the-counter painkillers from the neighborhood drugstores. Where would you be without a painkiller fix?  Many of my senior golfers pass around pain pills to each other by the fourth hole so they can finish the round.

Not every pain can be eliminated by surgery.   Meditation, breathing techniques, yoga and even prayer do relieve pain. Your mind has the ability to help control your body’s pain.

PAIN  GUIDELINES NOT FOLLOWED
Researchers in Australia found that general practitioners failed to adhere to international evidence-based guidelines, and may not be providing the best outcomes for their patients.

They found that more than 25% of patients received imaging despite the fact guidelines discourage the use of imaging.
Only 20% received advice, education, and reassurance of a favorable prognosis, despite the recommendation that everyone should get counseling.

Simple analgesics, such as acetaminophen, were initially only recommended 17% of the time.  Over a third of patients received non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, and 20% received opioids for their pain.

SOLVING PAIN GUIDELINE  NON-COMPLIANCE

Why don’t doctors follow the key treatment recommendation guidelines? It shows that simply publishing treatment guidelines and providing brief workshops do not change clinical practice.   This may make Obama Care harder to implement.

There is a false assumption that if you publish guidelines, they will be followed. There are many different guidelines. The doctors must agree on the contents of the guidelines, and feel confident in implementing the guidelines and believing that they will make a positive difference in their patient’s outcomes.

In the last 20 years, the focus has been on evaluating new and existing therapies with clinical trials and systematic reviews.  There has been no attempt to encourage doctors to provide evidence-based treatments.

THE PAIN GENE

Recently, a pain gene  was discovered in people who reported higher levels of pain were more likely to carry a particular DNA base, an A instead of a G.  The G. version of the gene shuts the protein off faster, stopping the pain signal sooner.

The A version was found in an estimated 10 to 30 percent of people.  This gene makes you more sensitive to pain.  The A version makes you more sensitive to pain. The gene affects the protein outside of nerve cells letting sodium enter under painful stimuli.   It would be nice if we could turn this gene off, by making the protein inactive, make you impervious to pain and still keep you  healthy.

BE HAPPY

If you are optimistic, you can get better relief of your pain without medicine.   Positive attitudes and thoughts distract your brain from feeling pain.  Laughing can also bring you relief.   You must think positive and be happy. Those who joke a lot, release a definite chemical that helps reduce pain.

Laughter also boosts your immune system and increases your ability to handle pain. It’s often hard to take responsibility for your own illness, and overcome a supposedly irreversible disease. It takes a lot of guts to take control of your own pain and work to relieve it. It’s much easier to take a pill than sit down to meditate. The pill works faster, and comes with more guaranteed results than watching an old Lucille Ball movie.

COMMENTARY

We often overcomplicate our medical care. It’s best to start with simple treatments that are delivered well.  Adding more treatments and tests will not speed your recovery. They only increase your costs and the risk of side effects.

Yet, pills are not perfect.  Alternative therapies such as acupuncture can help you control long-term pain better than pills.

Cortisone helps in the short term for inflammation, but long-term taking of this drug leads to osteoporosis, diabetes, and mental rage.   Visit www. cortisone

Remember that all drugs have serious side effects. That’s why your cure may be worse than your disease.

 Your comments are always appreciated.

DOCTOR SPEAKS OUT AGAINST HEALTH BILL

The very idea  that the government will dictate and ration  patient

DOCTOR SPEAKS OUT AGAINST HEALTH BILL

An  Indianapolis doctor's letter to Sen. Bayh about  the Health Bill
(Note:   Dr. Stephen E. Frazer, MD practices as an  anesthesiologist
in Indianapolis, IN  )

Here is a  letter I sent to Senator Bayh.. Feel free to  copy it and send
it around to all other  representatives. -- Stephen  Fraser
 M.D,

Senator  Bayh,

As a practicing  physician I have major concerns
with the health  care bill before Congress. I actually have read  the
bill and am shocked by the brazenness of the  government's
proposed involvement in the  patient-physician relationship.

The very idea  that the government will dictate and ration  patient
care is dangerous and certainly not  helpful in designing a health care system that  works for all.

Every physician I work with  agrees that we need to fix our health care  system, but the proposed bills currently making  their way through congress will be a disaster if  passed.

I ask you  respectfully and as a patriotic American to
look  at the following troubling lines that I have  read in the bill.
You cannot possibly believe  that these proposals are in the
best interests  of the country and our fellow  citizens.

 you.

Page 317 L 13-20:  PROHIBITION on ownership/investment.
(The Govt  tells doctors what and how much they can  own!)

Page 317-318 lines  21-25, 1-3: PROHIBITION on expansion.
(The  Govt is mandating that hospitals cannot  expand.)

Page 321  2-13: Hospitals have the opportunity to apply  for
exception BUT community input is required.   (Can you say  ACORN?)

Page 335 L 16-25 Pg  336-339: The Govt mandates establishment
of=2  outcome-based measures. (HC the way they want --  rationing.)

Page 341  Lines 3-9: The Govt has authority to disqualify
Medicare Advance Plans, HMOs, etc.   (Forcing people into the
 Govt  plan)

Page 354 Sec 1177: The  Govt will RESTRICT enrollment of 'special
 needs  people!'    Unbelievable!

Page  379 Sec 1191: The Govt creates more bureaucracy  via a
"Tele-Health Advisory Committee."   (Can you say HC by  phone?)

Page 425 Lines 4-12:  The Govt mandates "Advance-Care
Planning  Consult."  (Think senior citizens  end-of-life patients.)

Page  425 Lines 17-19: The Govt will instruct and  consult regarding

Page 425  Lines 22-25, 426 Lines 1-3: The Govt provides an
"approved" list of end-of-life resources;  guiding you in death.
(Also called 'assisted  suicide.')(Sounds  like Soylent Green to  me.)

Page  427 Lines 15-24: The Govt mandates a program for  orders on
"end-of-life."  (The Govt has a  say in how your life  ends!)

Page 429 Lines 1-9: An  "advanced-care planning consultant" will
be used  frequently as a patient's health  deteriorates.

Page 429 Lines  10-12: An "advanced care consultation" may
include an ORDER for end-of-life plans..   (AN ORDER TO DIE FROM
 THE  GOVERNMENT?!?)

Page 429  Lines 13-25: The GOVT will specify which doctors  can
write an end-of-life order..  (I  wouldn't want to stand before
God after getting  paid for THAT job!)

Page 430  Lines 11-15: The Govt will decide what level of  treatment
you will have at end-of-life!   (Again -- no  choice!)

Page 469:  Community-Based Home Medical Services =  Non-Profit
Organizations.  (Hello?   ACORN Medical Services  here!?!)

Page 489 Sec 1308:  The Govt will cover marriage and family therapy.
(Which means Govt will insert itself into  your marriage even.)

Page  494-498: Govt will cover Mental Health Services  including
defining, creating, and rationing  those services.

Senator,  I guarantee that I personally will do everything  possible
to inform patients and my fellow  physicians about the dangers of
the proposed  bills you and your colleagues are  debating.

Furthermore,  if you vote for a bill that enforces socialized  medicine
on the country and destroys the  doctor-patient relationship, I will
do everything in my power to  make sure you lose your job in the
next  election.

Respectfully,
  Stephen  E. Fraser, MD
